Artist Statement

I like to think of my work as testing the boundaries of different subcategories of art, contradicting elements that may be considered more traditional, with that of what falls more into the realm of contemporary art. With heavy inspiration from the Op Art movement of the 1960's and the Pop Art movement of the 1950's, I create colourful pieces with a focus on depth, shape, and line.

My work often blurs the lines between a painting and a sculpture, taking the traditional use of a canvas or wood, but with the addition of three-dimensional elements, through the use of clay, polyurethane foam, acrylic perspex, etc. The use of depth and perspective, as highlighted in the Op Art movement, is vital to creating the illusion of movement. Sometimes I may use materials that do physically create depth, or ones that only create the illusion of movement, it ultimately depends on the piece. The use of negative space makes a piece of art just as much as what you can physically see, and I use this concept as a reminder my work doesn't have to stay within the limit of four lines, and to choose materials that allow me to manipulate the idea of negative space and/or transparency. Rather than viewing the work as a singular end result, I prefer to observe it as a body that shows the artistic process.

Through the process of my life, a progress from two-dimensional to three- dimensional had been natural, which has ultimately led to the interest in instillation art. Creating such an immersive art experience is always the goal, walking through an instillation is like walking through a new reality, it surrounds and consumes you. As I progress as an artist I want to explore the idea of light instillation, whereas in the present I couple elements of the old with the new, I want to experiment with the idea of the present and the future. Living in a post-internet society surrounded by technology, I would like to delve into the crossover of what's reality and what's virtual reality, simultaneously looking at the possibility of entering a post-digital era.
